OPINION: Wellington’s waterfront is its most contested piece of land, for good reason: it’s a gem, and it’s worth fighting for.
After years of objections, visions of hotels on the harbour have come and gone. On the other hand, twin hulking boxes on Queen’s Wharf came to fruition, and the city must live with them.
The latest fight isn’t between the usual forces of commerce and landscape preservation, though.
It’s a more difficult one, and it concerns the one proper stretch of green space by the water: Frank Kitts Park.
Wellington City Council wants to overhaul the park, by moving a children’s playground, levelling a sort of amphitheatre and the wall that separates it from the water, creating a wide expanse of open lawn - and installing a Chinese garden. (more…)
A French Mayor will be tried on hate charges for complaining about the fact that white Christians are being replaced with foreign born Muslims in his town.
Robert Menard, an ally of Marine Le Pen’s National Front party, said that the number of Muslims in his city was a “problem”.
“In a class in the city centre in my town, 91 percent of the children are Muslims. Obviously, this is a problem. There are limits to tolerance,” Menard told French news channel LCI back in September.
On France’s first school day, Menard, who is the mayor of southern France town Beziers, also warned that the country was witnessing “the great replacement” of white Christians with Muslim immigrants.
“I just described the situation in my town,” Menardtold AFP. “It is not a value judgement, it’s a fact. It’s what I can see.”
The trial is set for March 8 in Paris.
The Mayor’s comments are similar in nature to those made by right-wing Dutch leader Geert Wilders, who wasfound guiltyof “inciting discrimination” after asking a room full of supporters if they wanted “more or fewer Moroccans” in the Netherlands.
Over the last 18 months, Europe has suffered a number of devastating terror attacks carried out by Islamic terrorists in the aftermath of a migrant wave that has seen millions of Muslims pour into the continent.
New Zealand has launched an anti-dumping investigation into Chinese steel - despite the Chinese Government saying the allegations were a “wild guess” with no merit.
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) has confirmed the investigation.
Dumping is the exporting of goods cheaper than the products are sold for in a country’s own domestic market, and is illegal under most trade agreements.
MBIE said it had this week started a goods dumping or subsidisation investigation into galvanised steel coil from China.
The investigation application was from New Zealand Steel, which claimed that imports of Chinese steel coil are being subsidised by the Chinese Government, which has caused “material injury” to the New Zealand industry. (more…)
Terrorists planned a Christmas Day bomb attack targeting Melbourne landmarks including Federation Square and Flinders Street Station, police claim.
A major operation between Victoria Police, the Australian Federal Police and Asio foiled the alleged plot, and five people are in custody.
Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said this morning: “We believe that there was an intention to conduct what we call a multimode attack, possibly on Christmas Day, the possible locations that we have been working on have been Federation Square, Flinders Street Station and St Paul’s Cathedral. At least 2,000 educators around the country reported racist slurs and other derogatory language leveled against white students in the first days after Donald Trump was elected president.
