Dealings with Lovely India restaurant owners turned ugly for Labour Inspectorate officials after they became belligerent in handing over employment records.
An investigation would soon discover why - there were no records.
The dispute over the request - for holiday and leave records - ended up before the Employment Relations Authority and saw the Rotorua restaurant fined $10,000 after it was found their record-keeping was negligible.
The ERA found company director Nilin Patel’s co-operation with the Inspectorate’s inquiry - which dragged on for a year - was “grudging and partial”.
Labour Inspectorate national manager Stu Lumsden said Patel was unable to provide them with employment records within the time set by legislation, which hindered their investigation. (more…)
